Pohang Institute of Metal Industry Advancement (POMIA), a research institute established in 2007 to provide technical support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and to accelerate the steel industrial technology development, has a leading position as a joint research institute. POMIA has been in continuous challenges and innovations for last 10 years. Among the various demands from local businesses, we have focused on metal utilization, component design, energy and environmental materials, and innovative technologies to promote prospective future local industries. We have been trying to do our best to achieve the main tasks as a research institute specialized in supporting the local SMEs. Moreover, we have established the specialized research center for the steel pipe technology development and titanium industry chain as a future growth engine. These major achievements have led POMIA to become the vital basis for local industrial technology innovation

Steel and metal industries are faced with various challenges due to internal and external changes. In order to change the crisis situation into an opportunity, POMIA has put efforts to strengthen the industrial chain and develop the metal utilization technology through establishing the linkage between local metal industries in addition to the existing technical supports. Under the new vision of "Joint Research Institute to Lead the Technology for SMEs", we will reinforce our core role for local industry development by enhancing the practical applicability of SMEs, strengthening the technical capabilities of local hidden champions, and achieving creative research outcomes.
